Anvelink and Arneson Continue to Aquire Tri-Oval
Victories!
By Dave Panske |
May 25,
2003; Seymour, WI - A beautiful day for racing action on a
busy Memorial Day weekend at the Seymour Tri Oval Raceway Sunday night. A field of 116
cars was watched by the largest crowd of the young season.
Eric Arneson set the pace at the start of the Street Stock feature followed by
David Zegers, Joe Van Ooyen, Brian Koch, Shawn Van Ooyen and David Hoerning. Joe Van Ooyen
moved inside Arneson to take the lad on lap 7. Following a lap 9 caution, Van Ooyen
continued to lead the way but changes were coming. Hoerning came through to take the lead
on lap 12, only to have Phil Hiles take over the top spot one lap later. Hiles lead for 2
laps before Lance Arneson powered by on lap 15. Foe the final five laps, Arneson pulled
away from the field as he collected his third straight division feature of the year. Hiles
won the battle for the runner up spot with Hoerning taking third place. Jamie Van Ooyen
worked his way through traffic to take a strong 4th place finish ahead of Joe Van Ooyen
and Darci Czarapata.
Jeremy Christians sat on the pole for the IMCA Stock Car main and set the pace for over
half of the contest when a caution erased a huge lead and bunched the field behind. On the
restart, Rod Snellenberger pulled into the top spot followed by Larry Karcz, Jr. Hot Rod
extended a lead to the finish to win his first division feature at the Tri Oval since
September 5th of 1999. Karcz chased the winner to the line with Christians taking third.
Shawn Kilgore, Rick Mahlberg and Chaz Van Ooyen rounded out the top six.
After a very rough start to the 2003 season, Jared Siefert had a good run started for the
night and then sat on the pole for the IMCA Mod feature. When the green appeared, Siefert
took off and hid from the pack while Brian Mullen made a steady run to the front of the
pack. Mullen ended a several lap battle for the runner up spot by taking command on lap 7
from Dennis Young. He then set out to chew into the lead of Siefert. Mullen slowly closed
the gap and when the white flag was going to appear, he had closed to a car length but ran
out of laps and finished a car length back at the finish line. A solid battle mid pack
during the entire non stop event saw Benji LaCrosse come from mid field to claim third
place. Travis Spaulding took fourth with Jay Schraufnagel, making his first run of the
year taking fifth and Art Siefert rounding out the top six.
The win for Siefert was his first of the year here and second for the weekend after
winning Saturday night at the Hill.
Tom Naeyaert led a solid field of Late Models to the green and set the pace, opening a
good lead until a caution for debris bunched the pack on lap 10. He was followed by A.J.
Diemel, Doug Klemp, Randy Markwardt, Nick Anvelink and Terry Casey.
On the restart, Naeyaert again led the way, but Anvelink started to pick his way to the
front, taking over third on lap 12 and second 2 laps later. He then set sights on Naeyaert
and moved up on the leader and took over the top spot using an inside move through the tri
oval with three laps left. Anvelink scored his second straight feature win here with
Naeyaert taking second. Diemel settled for third with Casey in fourth, Klemp taking fifth
and Markwardt sixth.
Justin Sobieck led the opening 3 laps of the 4 Banger main with Marty Vande Hei taking
command on lap 4. Vande Hei continued to set the pace after a caution on lap 8, with
Jasper Drengler making a charge to the front. Drengler moved into the runner up spot on
lap 10 and took the lead for 1 lap on lap 12. Drengler slid wide with three laps left and
gave the lead back to Vande Hei who pulled away to win his first feature of the year here.
Sobieck took second with Drengler holding on for third.
Next week all High School Grads will be admitted Free to the races by showing their School
ID card. Then, on the following Thursday, the Tri Oval will play host to the second leg of
the northeastern WI swing of the WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series. The first race is on
Wednesday night at the Shawano Speedway , and then invades the Tri Oval on Thursday night.
That will be followed by an open show at Luxemburg of Friday night.
