June 15, 2003; Seymour, WI - Racing returned to the Seymour Tri Oval Raceway under full moon conditions Sunday night with the largest crowd of the season watching an exciting show.
The Street Stock put 21 cars on the grid for their feature event with David Zegers setting the pace through 5 laps before Rick Naparalla slipped inside to take charge on lap 6. David Hoerning stormed into the top spot through the tri oval 2 laps later before a red flag stopped action for a wild ride taken by Ron Otto. On lap 9. As he was entering the tri oval , the brakes failed on his car and he flew off the back stretch and hit the grass just before the pit lane. When he landed, the car went sideways and rolled over twice before the guard rail and light pole stopped the car upside done in front of the stock car feature in the staging area. He crawled out as the safety crews arrived and waved to the crowd which gave him an ovation. The car was all but destroyed in the incident but Ron was not injured. Another caution on the restart took Darci Czarapata out of the race. Hoerning took the lead again on the final restart on lap 10, but point leader, Lance Arneson took the outside route out of turn 2 on lap 11, to take command and drove off to take the checker in the time lime race for the fifth win of the year. Hoerning and Naparalla remained right behind the leader until the final lap when both pulled out of the race with problems, which put Phil Hiles into the runner up spot at the finish followed by Shawn Van Ooyen, Jeremy Wiitala, Zegers and Charlie Van Ooyen. No major incidents in the Stock Car feature but a couple cautions that slowed a furious race. It took a couple tries to get the first lap recorded with Mike Franzke leading the first lap before spinning in front of the field out of the tri oval on lap 2. Jamie Colwell took over the top spot and led the next circuit before Jeremy Christians took over. Christians could not shake the field with Colwell and Shawn Kilgore hounding the leader. Kilgore was strong using the outside line and stayed alongside of the other 2 in a good three way battle for the top spot. Kilgore could gain the lead out of the tri oval, by Christians could maintain the rest of the way. After a lap 11 caution, the lead trio was joined by point leader, Jason Czarapata, Greg Gretz, Rod Snellenberger and John Heinz. Kilgore went to the outside again after the restart and continued to pester Christians for the lead to the finish. Czarapata was there also, working the inside while the scramble remained tight behind for fourth place. Christians was able to hold off the charge of Kilgore to claim his second straight feature win here. Kilgores great run was DQd following a post race inspection, which put Czarapata into the second spot followed by Gretz, Brandon Czarapata, Heinz and Snellenberger. Eric Scribner took the lead for the opening lap of the Modified main with R.M. Van Pay taking over on lap 2. A caution slowed the pace on lap 5 and after the restart, a four wide trip through the tri oval by the leaders, Dean Maurer emerged in the top spot and started to open a gap as the rest tries to sort out behind. Jared Siefert broke lose of the pack a couple laps later and set out to chase down the leader. It took six laps but Siefert reeled in Maurer and on lap 14, took a slingshot move out of the tri oval into the top spot. Siefert was able to pull away as well and looked to be a run away winner until a late race caution appeared on lap 17. Maurer, Scott Mullen, Travis Spaulding, Brian Mullen, Van Pay and Mike Klenz were now right behind for the restart. Once again, there was a four wide scramble into the tri oval on the restart, and Spaulding came out on top. Siefert and Brian Mullen got together in the mix up with both ending up out of the contest. Spaulding had to hold the lead for 3 laps, but they were tough laps as Maurer and Scott Mullen hounded his to the checker. Spaulding picked up his first Tri Oval feature win since June 14, l998 with Mullen taking the runner up spot over Maurer. Art Siefert came from deep in the field after winning the consy to take fourth place from Klenz at the finish. Brad Rohloff rounded out the top six. After a lap 1 caution in the late model contest, the race went non stop to the finish. Pete Parker took the lead from Luke Roffers on lap 3, with Terry Casey moving into second one lap later. The pair pulled away from the rest of the field and staged one of the best lead battles in some time. Parker used the inside line and Casey used the high line, but the pair diced inside and outside to swap the lead several times. Lapped traffic also made the race interesting a couple times with the leaders side by side and splitting to go through the tri oval three wide. Casey, the current point leader, made the final pass for the lead on lap 17 and held off Parker to earn his first feature win of the year. Parker was right behind in second. Nick Anvelink was third with Roffers holding fourth. A.J. Diemel took fifth and Randy Markwardt rounded out the top six. D.J. Jorgensen led the opening 2 laps of the 4 Banger finale before a red on lap 3 stopped the race, for what turned out to be un-necessary. Dick White was running four wide mid pack and caught the berm on the high side of the tri oval. His car got in the air and the rolled over 2 times before ending up on the wheels. White kept the car running and quickly got the car rolling again to continue the race, but not before the race was stopped. The crowd applauded the effort as he drove by the grandstand, but his race was over with a damaged radiator. Jorgensen led the restart, before Jasper Drengler took over and drove off for his second win of the year. Marty Vande Hei took second followed by Tim Jorgensen, Todd Welsing and Matt Drawenek. Two regular Sunday night programs are on tap before a busy 4th of July week when three races will be staged in six days at the Tri Oval.
