June 5,
2005; Seymour, WI - A brief heavy downpour caused over an hour
delay with the result a curfew shortened program at the New Seymour Speedway Sunday night.
N.E.W. DIRT welcomed a record field of 149 cars to the opener and racing on the
new track brought many positive remarks from drivers and fans.
The Street Stock division took the track for the first feature of the season. Jerry Kope
led the opening circuit before Fred Davister slipped inside and grabbed the top spot.
Davister and Kope pulled away as the field strung out. Defending champion, Darren Otto,
chased the duo early but dropped back a bit after half way. Davister managed to hold off
the persistent Kope despite running into lapped traffic over the final 5 laps.
Davister collected the first feature flag on the new track with Kope right behind. Otto
took third with Brian Kock in fourth. Jeremy Wiitala and Darci Czarapata rounded out the
top six.
The IMCA Stock Cars were next with Rod Snellenberger drawing the pole for the event. Shawn
Wagner was scored as the leader on the opening lap with Snellenberger taking charge on lap
2. Larry Karcz, Jr, Bruce Belland, Jesse Colwell, Jamie Colwell and Kyle Fredrick were
running right behind. On lap 5, several cars running close behind the leaders, got
together out of turn 2, with heavy damage to the cars of Jeff Vlies and Dereck Bruechert.
Several others were involved but no drivers were injured.
However, one of the cars slid into the infield and hit one of the track corner workers. He
was taken to the hospital as a precaution, but was alert and did not want to go for the
ride. The red flag ended the feature event which was scored complete.
The caution also ended the program as it was past curfew. The Mod, LM and 4 Cyl features
were not run.
Racing will continue every Sunday night at the New Seymour Speedway into September.
